What type of study is this? What is the radiotracer? This is a red blood cell scan. The patient is a 78 y.o male referred for GI bleed study . He presented with acute on chronic GI bleed (transfusion dependent) estimated to be in proximal 1/3 ileum. Unable to identify exact source/location with scope, CTA or pill cam. NM scan was requested for localization. Red blood cells were labeled with technetium 99m by in vitro method. The labeled red blood cells were readministered to the patient intravenously. Dynamic images of the abdomen and pelvis are obtained for 60 minutes. Serial delayed static images of the abdomen are obtained up to 30 minute post radiotracer administration, as well as SPECT-CT of the mid abdomen.

What are the findings? Dynamic images demonstrates radiotracer activity conforming the small bowel moving forward.

Subsequently SPECT-CT imaging was performed. Go to the next page to see the images and further information.
